World's 'tallest man', Leonid Stadnyk, dies aged 44

 
Leonid Stadnyk, believed to be the world's tallest man at 8ft 4 inches has died. He was just 44. The peasant farmer from the Ukrainian village of Podoliantsy, died on Sunday August 24th from a brain haemorrhage after health problems.

In his last interview, Leonid, who wears a  talked about how his height was a curse, why he refused to be measured by the Guinness Book of World Records and also why he refused to get married
"To me, my height is a curse, a punishment from God, not something to celebrate. What sin I have committed, I do not know. All my life I have dreamed of being just like everyone else. I don't want or need the fame that this would bring so I have no desire to be in this Guinness book.
"I never got married because I don't want to inflict my problems on a wife. I think it would not be fair on her" he said.
At one point, his condition, called giganticism, left him growing at the rate of roughly a foot every 3 years. His feet measured 18 inches in length while his palms were more than a foot in diameter


Cameroon confirms disarming Nigerian soldiers

The Cameroonian military authorities have confirmed the disarming of Nigerian soldiers in the country. This is coming on the heels of reports that about 480 Nigerian soldiers yesterday fled into Cameroon, following fierce fighting with Boko Haram militants. The Defence Headquarters, has however, explained how Nigerians soldiers crossed into Cameroon.

Confirming the disarming of Nigerian soldiers, a Cameroonian Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Didier Badjek, said those involved are now being accommodated in schools. Clashes are said to be continuing in the border town of Gamboru/Ngala.Continue...

Military, Boko Haram battle for border town

Armed Boko Haram men returned to Gamboru/Ngala, near a Cameroon border, in North-East Borno State yesterday, in a push to annex the area, resulting in heavy fighting with Nigerian military troops. This left scores dead, a security source said.

The source said some Boko Haram fighters had attacked a military base and police station in the town in the early hours of yesterday apparently to test the preparedness of troops in the area barely four months after the first attack which left nearly 200 people dead.

“Our men engaged the terrorists when they came, and succeeded in gunning many of them down. But it was as if the insurgents were just sent as guinea pigs to test the might of our men. Many of them came later with determination to overrun the town,” the source stated. The fighting lasted for about five hours, he added.
The fierce fighting, which continued till most part of yesterday, forced many residents to flee into neighbouring Cameroon communities.Continue...

1000 Bishops, Pastors Hit Abuja to Reconcile Jonathan, Obasanjo

As 2015 general elections in the country approaches, over 1000 Bishops and Pastors from the Pentecostal fold on Sunday stormed the Ecumenical Center Abuja to reconcile President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasajo.

The Clerics who came from different parts of the country arrived late on Saturday while some of them from Imo State arrived early hours of Sunday and slept at the park as there were no officials of the organizers of the program.

But it was gathered that because of the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan who was away to Germany on a national official duty and that of the former President Obasanjo who was said to have been represented by his pastor the reconciliation prayer meeting could not precede.Continue...

3 PDP govs set to decamp – Wamakko

 Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko said yesterday that two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors from the North and one from the South will soon de­camp to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). He told reporters in Kaduna, venue of the APC North-West caucus meeting to strategize ahead of its zonal rally slated for Sokoto State early next month, that the party would pull surprises in 2015 general elections.

He said: “We met here to first and foremost put a functional zonal office and other offices in place before holding the zonal rallies to kick-start our party’s vic­tory stride by 2015.

“As I am talking to you now, three PDP governors have indicated their interest to join the APC between now and the end of September; two of the governors are from the North while the third one is from the South,” he said.Continue...

Boko Haram declares Gwoza ‘Islamic Caliphate’

 In a 52 minute video made available to AFP, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, declared the creation of an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza town in Borno state seized by the sect early this month.
According to AFP, Shekau declared that Gwoza now has 'nothing to do with Nigeria'.

    "Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate. By the grace of Allah we will not leave the town. We have come to stay,” said Shekau

We bought human skulls for N30,000 ─ Herbalists

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected human parts dealers who allegedly bought and sold human skulls in parts of Ogun and Lagos states.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspects ─ Muritala Mustapha and Sunday Oluyeba ─ were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command after a tip-off.

It was further learnt that while Mustapha was arrested last Saturday, August 16, in the Ojumele area of Sagamu, Ogun State. Oluyeba was apprehended on Monday in the same area.

The police said 42-year-old Mustapha was caught with two human heads in his house, adding that he confessed to have obtained them from his friend, Oluyeba.Continue...

13-Yr-Old School Boy Impregnates A Beautiful Woman He Met Online

"A Glendale woman is accused of having a s*xual relationship with a 13-year-old boy and getting pregnant for him. Anna Areola-Hernandez is facing charges of s*xual conduct with a minor, child molestation, unlawful age misrepresentation, and an adult posing as a minor for a sexual conduct.

In February, the boy's mother alerted police about the relationship. She told investigators that Areola- Hernandez gave her son a s*xually transmitted disease.

During a confrontation call set up by police, Areola-Hernandez told the victim's mother that she was pregnant with the victim's baby. Police have not said if Areola-Hernandez is actually pregnant. When police took Areola-Hernandez into custody and questioned her she denied having a relationship with the boy but later admitted they had s3x and she told him she was 15 years old.

Two of the eight robbers (pictured below) who accosted a couple and their three months old baby on their way to their village in Kogi have been arrested and will soon be prosecuted.

The robbers were eight in number and after robbing them of their cash and valuables at gunpoint; they tied the husband to a tree and raped his wife until she fainted in his presence.

The eight of them took turns in raping her until she fainted before escaping with their car and valuables. As God will have it; two of the robbers were later apprehended while trying to escape from the scene of the crime. FG bans inter-state movement of corpses

 


The National Council on Health has banned   the transport   of corpses and critically ill persons on both local and international routes   with immediate effect.

It said only dead bodies with waivers granted by the Federal Ministry of Health would be transported within and into Nigeria . Such corpses must be conveyed   only   in   ambulances.

To show its seriousness on the movement of corpses, the council advised state governments to enact legislation for   its effective compliance .

The NCH which is the highest policy making body in the health sector reached the decision after a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Members of the council are   the Minister of Health,   the Minister of State for Health;   state Health commissioners ;   the Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Federal Capital Territory ,   and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health.

Violence rocks Osun after guber poll

 The APC members were said to have been attacked when they were celebrating the victory of the candidate of the party in the August 9 governorship election in the state, Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Man arrested for killing school pupil after she refused his sexual advances

 The Ebonyi state police command has arrested 28 year old Sunday Nwali for allegedly killing a pupil miss Chioma Ezekwele of Kingdom Secondary School in Ikweator Idembia in Ezza South Local Government of Ebonyi state after she refused his sexual advances.

Parading the suspect before newsmen at the state police command in Abakaliki the state capital, the state Police Commissioner, Mr Maigari Dikko said Nwali aka Machine in company of his friends named Chukwuma Eloma and Friday Ebenyi had gone to the hostel of the school where they accosted late Chioma and her friend Sandra. He demanded sex from Chioma which she refused and in anger, he shot her dead. He then dragged her friend Sandra into the bush where he raped her and then fled the scene. Continue...

Passenger slumps, dies at Lagos airport

There was confusion at the Arrival Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Monday, as a passenger slumped and died.

Sources at the airport told our correspondent that the passenger slumped in front of the Port Health Services office, while waiting to collect his vaccination card, usually known as Yellow Card.

Some staff and passengers fled the scene following the man’s collapse, as they feared he was infected with the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

CCTV identified me, I couldn’t deny it ─ Suspect

Two suspects, Ahmed Saliu and Stanley Osadebe, are presently cooling their heels in the Lagos State Police Command cell for allegedly stealing exotic phones at the Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.

Our correspondent gathered that 24-year-old Saliu, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, was arrested last Saturday at about 10am in the area after he attempted to steal exotic phones from unsuspecting sellers.

Newly wed nurse is Ebola case No 10

A newly wed nurse who treated Patrick Sawyer in hospital is the 10th confirmed case to test positive for Ebola virus disease, 22 days after the disease hit Nigeria.

The nurse joined seven others in quarantine and treatment after she was diagnosed at the weekend, but her husband is under surveillance, health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said.

Some 177 people are now under surveillance, up from 139 announced Friday.

Treatement of the eight people quarantined in past weeks has primarily involved antibiotics, electrolytes replacement to combat dehydration in the absence of definite response from the US for experimental drug ZMapp, which was administered to two American doctors who contracted the virus in Liberia.

Suicide bombers’ trainer nabbed with 16 females

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Kano has arrested a man suspected to be the master trainer of Boko Haram female suicide bombers with 16 females who were reportedly being trained for suicide operations, Daily Trust, gathered from security sources.

It was gathered that the man identified as Ibrahim Ibrahim was arrested in Dala LGA of Kano during a raid by the Joint Task Force Thursday.

Daily Trust gathered that the females were being trained to carry out suicide bombings when the JTF raided their training ground and arrested them and their trainer.

The just concluded Sallah celebration was marred in the state as female suicide bombers struck at five different locations. About 30 persons lost their lives to the female suicide bombers who were believed to be less than 20 years old.Continue...

Bodies dumped in streets as West Africa struggles to curb Ebola


(Reuters) - Relatives of Ebola victims in Liberia defied government orders and dumped infected bodies in the streets as West African governments struggled to enforce tough measures to curb an outbreak of the virus that has killed 887 people.

In Nigeria, which recorded its first death from Ebola in late July, authorities in Lagos said eight people who came in contact with the deceased U.S. citizen Patrick Sawyer were showing signs of the deadly disease.

The outbreak was detected in March in the remote forest regions of Guinea, where the death toll is rising. In neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the outbreak is now spreading fastest, authorities deployed troops to quarantine the border areas where 70 percent of cases have been detected.Continue...

38-year-old in court for sexually abusing girl, 3

A 38-year-old man, Michael Edise, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly abusing the daughter of his neighbour.

Ebola fear prompts South Korea university to cancel Nigerians' invitation


(Reuters) - A South Korean university rescinded an invitation for three Nigerians to attend a conference and a group of South Korean medical volunteers called off a trip to West Africa amid growing concerns about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

The Duksung Women's University in Seoul said in a statement the school "politely withdrew" its invitation for three Nigerian students to attend an international conference that it is co-hosting with the United Nations starting from Monday.

Fear about a possible spread of the deadly virus had prompted a student from the university to post a plea on the country's presidential office Web site, asking for the cancellation of the entire event.
The university has said it was going ahead with the conference to be attended by students, including 28 from Africa.Continue...

"Nigerian Army Should Get Ready, We're Coming To Attack Damaturu On Aug 9" -- Boko Haram Writes

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have given a notice of attack to the 233 Battalion of the Nigerian Army based at Kukareta Barracks in Damaturu, Yobe State, National Mirror reports.

The sect was said to have expressed its resolve to attack Damaturu on August 9. Also known as the Special Operations Battalion of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, the formation is headed by a commanding officer who was said to have received a letter by Boko Haram stating its intentions.

National Mirror gathered that the letter was received between Tuesday and Friday last week. In June, soldiers of the battalion were said to have uncovered a terrorist cell within the state capital, Damaturu. The cell was yet to be raided for certain reasons. One, the commanders were careful of picking a date for the raid for fears that a “mole” within the Army could leak the information to insurgents. Secondly, the infantry soldiers were said to have advised that men of the Air Force be sent to “shell” the cell before ground troops would be sent in.Continue...

Cult war: 3 killed in Rivers

Three persons were yesterday, killed in cult-related clash­es in two commu­nities of Bane and Kpaa in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.


Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the local gov­ernment, Hyacinth Nwiye, who confirmed the incidents to journalists, said two per­sons were killed in Bane, while a woman was shot dead in Kpaa community during the clashes between two rival cult groups.

According to him, one of the cultists was shot and be­headed.

Man kills lover for declining marriage proposal

A 28-year-old man, Raphael Effiong, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing his lover, Gift Sunday, in a hotel because she refused to marry him.

Our correspondent learnt that while 26-year-old Sunday, who lived on Fadiya Street, Ketu, Lagos, was a fashion designer, Effiong, an indigene of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, was working as a driver in a telecommunications company in Lagos.

Confusion as residents find baby’s placenta with Alfa

The discovery of a baby placenta in the residence of a man, identified simply as Alfa Gani, is causing confusion in the Laduba community, Ogidi area of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the discovery was made when some volunteers went round the Laduba community to appeal for financial contributions from residents for the repair of a faulty transformer in the area.
