Police kill kidnap kingpin in Aba

The Police in Ohuru Isimiri Division near Aba in Abia State, at the week­end, shot dead a suspected kidnap kingpin, whose gang had allegedly been terrorizing the city in re­cent times.

Luis Suarez returns home to a hero's welcome after being booted out of the World Cup

Luiz Suarez returned to his native home of Uruguay yesterday June 27th to a hero's welcome after being booted out of the World Cup and banned from all football for four-months for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. Not only were hundreds of fans at Montevideo airport to welcome him, waving banners of support, but the president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, was also at the airport.

Blast in brothel in northeast Nigeria kills 11 - police



An explosion overnight in a brothel in the northeastern Nigerian city of Bauchi killed 10 people, police said on Saturday, while 14 others were wounded.

The statement sent by text message said the cause of the blast was unknown. Islamist sect Boko Haram has targeted several cities across north and central Nigeria in the past few months.
Bauchi state police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said 14 people were rushed to hospital after the explosion in the People's Hotel brothel, at the Bayangari area of Bauchi metropolis.
"The entire building has been cordoned off and the scene secured. No arrest has been made but an investigation has commenced to ascertain the cause," he said.

Bloodbath averted in Kano

A major blood­bath was Fri­day averted in Kano as Nigeria Police Force, intercepted 13 gas cylinders of Impro­vised Explosive De­vices (IED) primed to explode on worship­pers at a Jumat Pray­ing Ground in the state capital.

Police raid kidnappers training school, arrest 37

The Abia State Police Command says it has raided one Ugorji compound at the Obingwa Local Government Area used by hoodlums as “a training school for kidnappers.”
Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, while briefing journalists on Thursday, said 37 suspects were arrested by his men during the raid.

The raid, according to him, was carried out following a tip-off that some hoodlums were using the compound located at Umuoke village as a training ground for kidnappers.
He, however, stated that some kidnappings reported in some parts of the state did not suggest that the ‘jungle boys’ which once held the state to ransom were on the prowl again.
The police boss assured residents that security agencies had stepped up surveillance in the state to ensure safety of lives and property.Continue...

Frank was an On-Air-Personality. I cut my teeth in Radio Nigeria, Metro FM; they sent me on training in year 2000. I came back to become a radio announcer.  I studied every aspect of broadcasting; news, news reading, commentary, documentary and voice over presentation. So, before I started “ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, I was into radio broadcasting. I was an announcer on Metro FM. 97.6 and it was a fabulous pedestal that prepared me for upcoming projects in broadcasting. 16 soldiers, scores of insurgents killed in Borno clash


No fewer  than 16 security operatives, including soldiers and dozens of suspected members of Boko Haram terrorists were reportedly killed Tuesday night, when insurgents attacked a military post in Bulabulin Ngaura in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

20 killed in fresh attack on Abuja

Boko Haram gunmen struck in Abuja yesterday, the third this year, killing 21 people while 21 others were injured, police said. They have been taken to several hospitals in the Fed­eral Capital Territory (FCT).

At least four persons were confirmed dead when two explosions suspected to have emanated from a Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off near the Folawiyo Energy Depot along Creek Road n the Apapa of Lagos state.

Boko Haram abducts 91 again in Borno



Maiduguri—At least 91 persons, were said to have been abducted by suspected Islamic militants between Thursday and Sunday from the Kumanza,Yaga and Dagu, Damboa and Dagu, Damboa and Askira Uba Local Government Areas of Borno State, local vigilante officials said yesterday night.

Four other villagers were killed while attempting to escape from their abductors, said Aji Khalil, Chairman, Sector 5 of the local vigilante group in Borno State.

Explosion rocks Kano health college, kills eight

At least eight people were killed and 20 wounded by an explosion at a college campus in the heart of the northern Nigerian city of Kano during school hours on Monday, police said.
It was not immediately clear if Islamist militants were behind the explosion. Bombings and attacks by armed insurgents now happen almost daily in Nigeria's north, where militant group Boko Haram is trying to carve out an Islamist state.

Boko Haram kills 30 in fresh attack


Thirty people may have been killed while over 60 children and women have been kidnapped by Boko Haram in separate attacks on some communities in the southern parts of Borno State.The Islamist insurgents attacked Kummabza, Gurdlagwal, Yafa and Yaza villages both in Damboa and Askira Uba Local Government between Thursday last week and Sunday. They killed many people, a source from Lassa, who did not want his name in print, told Daily Sun on phone.
“They went from one village to the other, killing about 30 people. They took away many children and women,” the source said, adding, hundreds of villagers around the area have fled to Lassa to take refuge.

Ritualists invade Ebonyi: Shrine where ritual killings take place discovered in Ishiagu communit

Recently, the Ishiagu community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State erupted, following the discovery of a shrine where ritual killings allegedly took place.

It was gathered that when the nefarious activities going on in the shrine were ex­posed, youths of the community went wild and destroyed the shrine as well as the prop­erty of the Chief priest and two suspected agents (names withheld by us) from Ngwog­wo community. Among the items recovered from the shrine is a picture of the Chief priest holding something that looks like a human hand as well as a register said to be containing the names of the people who had been killed by the evil men and those yet to be killed. Pipeline explosion at Takwa Bay

Some suspected vandals have allegedly punctured petroleum pipeline at the Takwa Bay area of Lagos thereby causing a shut down in the lines of fuel distribution.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the incident has caused a huge explosion in the area and fire has engulfed the area where the incident occurred.

The NEMA spokesperson Ibrahim Farinloye told sunnewsonline.com that the incident occurred in the middle of the night, adding that, “valves and supplies have been shut down to suffocate the fire.”
He said that safety officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC) Atlas Cove base are already working to put out the fire.

Tarba killings: 24-hr curfew imposed on Wukari, Ibi as death toll hits 22

Jalingo— Alarmed by the magnitude of killings and destruction of property in Wukari and Ibi local government areas of the state, Taraba State Government yesterday slammed a 24-hour curfew on the two warring communities.

Similarly, the police have been deployed in the affected communities to prevent the escalation of violence and to fish out the perpetrators of the attacks.
The Taraba State Police Commissioner, Mrs. Kalafite Adeyemi, who announced the measures during a visit to the areas yesterday, warned that adequate punitive measures would be taken by security agents to deal with the masterminds of the crisis. Continue...

Police uncover bombs in Owerri church


OWERRI—THE police, yesterday, averted what could have amounted to the worst disaster in the southern part of the country by terrorists, as it defused three improvised explosive devices, IEDs, carefully planted in the Living Faith Church, (Winners Chapel), Owerri that accommodates more than 10,000 worshippers.
Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, in his reaction, said “the bombs had the capacity to cover about 500 metres and could have been a huge disaster if they had exploded as planned by the terrorists”.
Following the report that the police had uncovered and defused the explosives, palpable tension and confusion enveloped Owerri, Imo State capital as residents were apprehensive that members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, must have been responsible for it. Continue to read more..

Some of the schoolgirls abducted by militant group Boko Haram may never return home, Nigeria's influential former president Olusegun Obasanjo said, in some of the most pessimistic comments yet on their fate from a member of the country's elite.

Residents attack suspected killers’ den, rescue boy

The police in Ogun State have uncovered a house said to be used for ritual purposes in Ado Odo Community, Ota Local Government Area.
A young boy was said to have been rescued from the bungalow which is surrounded by no fewer than three primary schools.
When Source visited the scene on Wednesday, some curious residents were seen around the house.
One of them told our correspondent that the den was uncovered after the suspected kidnappers abducted a boy who was hawking belts.
The resident, who identified himself as Jamiu Abisogun, said, “It was a boy hawking belt that they kidnapped. The boy was negotiating the price of a belt with a man before he was called by one of the men in the building.

Residents confront robbers, hand two to police

Residents of Jones Street and Daodu Lane in Ebute Meta, Lagos State, in the early hours of Wednesday, confronted some suspected armed robbers in the area.

They succeeded in apprehending two of them and handed them over to the Iponri Police Division.
The suspects were said to have been part of a gang that had spent hours robbing several houses in the area.

Source learnt that the robbery started about 11pm on Tuesday evening when the gang members, who residents claimed were also cult members, stormed several houses, wielding cutlasses, axes and machetes.

Gunmen kill eight, burn church in central Nigeria: security official


Gunmen killed at least eight people and burned down a church as they charged through two villages in Nigeria's central Plateau state hours before dawn on Wednesday, a security official said.

Officers said they were investigating who was behind the raids in Nigeria's "Middle Belt", where the country's largely Muslim north and Christian south meet - a common flashpoint for violence.

Boko Haram kills 5 in 2 hours raid on villages

With impunity, Boko Haram brazingly attacked two villages near Chibok, Borno State on Monday, killing five villagers in a two-hour raid. The terrorists carted away foodstuffs and livestock.

This is even as Gov. Kashim Shettima blamed the society for the sect’s madness. He said provision of jobs to youths would be the antidote.

Residents said some gunmen believed to be Boko Haram stormed Tohya and Wurojene villages near Chibok, where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted almost two months ago. Suspected Nigerian militants kidnap up to 30 women


Suspected Islamist Boko Haram militants have kidnapped up to 30 women from nomadic settlements in Nigeria's northeast, close to where the group abducted more than 200 schoolgirls, residents and Nigerian media said.

Villagers from Chibok, where the schoolgirls were grabbed in April, told Reuters on Tuesday they had met nomads fleeing last week's raids and saying the kidnappers were demanding cattle in exchange for the women. Continue....

50 insurgents killed in ambush

The military had a good outing last weekend in Borno State when soldiers killed at least 50 Boko Haram insurgents in fire fight.
 In a statement, Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, said yesterday that troops  on counter-insurgency operation in southeastern part of the state last weekend engaged suspected Boko Haram members in a gun duel at Bilta in Gwoza Local Government, killing at least 50. He said the insurgents were were preparing to attack some communities in the area.

Boko Haram: 110 buried, 2, 000 displaced in Borno

No fewer than 110 corpses have been buried following bloody attacks on border communities in Borno State last week by Boko Haram. Besides, about 2, 000 residents were displaced with more bodies yet to be evacuated, officials said. 

Boko Haram launched coordinated attacks on six communities in Gwoza Local Government Area on the Cameroon border last Tuesday, leaving deaths and tales of woes in their wake. Survivors said Attagara, Aganjara, Angurva, Halaghwa, Agapalawa and Amuda communities located on the hilly side, east of Gwoza, suffered heavy casualties.

Blast kills at least 3 outside Nigeria barracks: witnesses

An explosion killed at least three people outside an army barracks in Nigeria's northeastern city of Gombe on Sunday, witnesses said, as local leaders reported the death count from a string of earlier attacks had reached 110.

No one claimed responsibility for the blast or last week's assaults but Islamist group Boko Haram has set off explosives and killed thousands in its five-year-old bid to carve out an Islamist state in the northeast. Click read more to continue

Photos: Protesting LASU students take over Lagos Govt House, cook meal there

Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday Thursday June 5th took their protest to the Lagos State Government House in Alausa ,Ikeja, where they barricaded the main entrance with their buses and remained there for hours. When they got hungry, they turned brought out their big pots, ingredients, firewood, made a fire and prepared a meal right there in front of the Government House gate. No time! Lol. The students prepared beans and eat it with bread.

The students are protesting the recent hike in their school fees, and asking Lagos State governor to intervene on their behalf. They vowed to remain at the scene until they got a positive response from the governor. They were eventually forced to leave when no official spoke with them but vowed to return until their demands are met. See more photos after the cut...

Explosion rocks Dankwambo’s residence

Two soldiers were feared dead following a bomb explosion yesterday in the personal residence of Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State.

Cameroonian army kills 60 Boko Haram members, 100 killed in Borno communal clash



MAIDUGURI— MORE than 100 persons were killed, yesterday, in a communal clash involving three border communities in Gwoza Local Government Council of Borno State. Members of Attagara, Aghapalwa and Gwoshe border communities were said to have taken up arms against one another. It, however, turned out to be a religious war between Christians and Muslims. Suspected killer of UNICAL lecturer in police net

A final year student in the Department of Microbiology, University of Calabar, has been arrested in connection with the death of a lecturer in the department, Dr. Godwin Iwatt, who was shot on May 6.
Iwatt, who was the examination officer in the department, later died on May 15.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the Cross River State Police Command arrested a final year student, whose name was withheld, in the Calabar South area.

A policeman in the unit, who pleaded anonymity, said, “The killer has been arrested. He said the shooting was done with the assistance of three other students who are still at large.”

The Police source said the suspect was traced through some death threat messages he sent to Iwatt, who allegedly refused to clear the student’s backlog of carryovers to enable him proceed for the national youth service.

“When he was arrested, he denied knowledge of the shooting, but when he was confronted with the evidences, including the text messages, he confessed that he was the culprit along with three others.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said investigation was still ongoing.
He said, “The principal suspect has been arrested, but investigation is still ongoing,”

80 killed in fresh Boko haram attacks

Boko Haram is at it again. At least, 80 villagers were on Tues­day killed in separate attacks on three border communities, southeast of Borno State, relations of the victims said yesterday.

A source said some gunmen sneaked into Attagara, Apapalawa and Aganjara villages in Gwoza Local Government Area, about 140 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital.

Nigerian police retract apparent ban on schoolgirls protests


Nigerian police said on Tuesday that protesters were free to march in the capital Abuja, after an uproar over comments by the police commissioner in which he appeared to ban demonstrations over more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by rebels.

Joseph Mbu made a statement on Monday in which he appeared to forbid protests on grounds that they could be hijacked by "dangerous elements" who could threaten state security. Protesters said they would challenge the ban in court on Tuesday, and they filed a complaint at noon (1100 GMT).

Another attack: B’Haram attacks three villages, scores feared dead

Boko Haram insurgents returned on Tuesday to the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and nearly razed three villages.

The insurgents were also said to have killed scores of people   in Amuda and Ngoshe as well as Attagara,where they shot nine worshippers to death in EYN Church on Sunday. Thirty seven of the attackers were however killed by Attagara villagers who mobilised and confronted them.

Army Officers found guilty of aiding Boko haram

This was made known on Monday by a high ranking military source who pleaded anonymity because he was not obligated to disclose detailed information about the development.

It was gathered that the Army and the Defence headquarters had alleged that some of their officers and men were giving vital official information to Boko Haram members. The allegation, however, brought about the arrest and arraignment of some officers who were court-martial in the army divisions in the northern part of the country.

Boko Haram kills 9 during church service

Suspected members of Boko Haram on Sunday stormed a   church     in Attagara, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and killed nine worshippers.

The attack which occurred barely 48 hours after the murder of     the Emir of Gwoza , Alhaji Idrissa Timta, by the sect in a highway ambush, brought the service to an abrupt end.

It was gathered on Monday in Maiduguri that the insurgents arrived at the EYN Church   and opened fire on worshippers at about 9.30am.

Police ban protests over Chibok schoolgirls

 Abuja The Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, yesterday banned the #BringBackOurGirls protests. Boko Haram had on April 14 this year kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

The kidnapping by the Islamist sect has led to protests seeking the rescue of the female students locally and internationally. The FCT boss also redeployed all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).

Jonathan’s secret negotiator: Chibok girls very ill



Some of the 219 schoolgirls still in the custody of Boko Haram insurgents have taken ill, according to a prominent Australian cleric, Dr. Stephen Davis.

Davis, a   hostage negotiator, said   the online publication of a British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, was   hired by President Goodluck Jonathan to broker the release of the girls.

Boko Haram again, went on the rampage yesterday, kill­ing 15 people through bomb­ing at Kaban, in Mubi, the commercial nerve centre of Adamawa State. At least 15 victims of the blast were hospitalised.


The latest attack came after the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrissa Timta, was shot and killed by the insurgents last Friday. The Adamawa victims, according to sources, were watching a football match while others met their waterloo during a bomb blast at a beer parlour at Kaban. The place is close to a football field and the Mubi General Hospital.
