Boko Haram kills 30 in fresh attack

Thirty people may have been killed while over 60 children and women have been kidnapped by Boko Haram in separate attacks on some communities in the southern parts of Borno State. The Islamist insurgents attacked Kummabza, Gurdlagwal, Yafa and Yaza villages both in Damboa and Askira Uba Local Government between Thursday last week and Sunday. They killed many people, a source from Lassa, who did not want his name in print, told Daily Sun on phone.
“They went from one village to the other, killing about 30 people. They took away many children and women,” the source said, adding, hundreds of villagers around the area have fled to Lassa to take refuge.

The attacks were not immediately known in Maiduguri because of the remoteness of the area. The affected villagers are about 100 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital. There is no official confirmation either by the military or police as at press time. Also, the Chairman of Damboa Local Government, Alhaji Alamin Mohd, could not be reached on phone while the council’s Secretary, Modu Mustapha, said he was not authorised to speak on the matter.
Meanwhile, four suspected Boko Haram insurgents have been arrested in Lassa, a few kilometres from Kummabza, Gurglagwal, Yafa and Yaza villages, when they attacked at the weekend, residents said.

The suspects were arrested while purchasing large quantity of foodstuffs at Lassa market yesterday. The quantity of food items, according to the source, aroused the suspicion of traders. “People suspected the four men may be Boko Haram errand men who came to the market to buy foodstuffs and also spy for the insurgents. We’ve handed them over to the military for investigation,” a resident said.
