Suspected killer of UNICAL lecturer in police net

A final year student in the Department of Microbiology, University of Calabar, has been arrested in connection with the death of a lecturer in the department, Dr. Godwin Iwatt, who was shot on May 6.
Iwatt, who was the examination officer in the department, later died on May 15.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the Cross River State Police Command arrested a final year student, whose name was withheld, in the Calabar South area.

A policeman in the unit, who pleaded anonymity, said, “The killer has been arrested. He said the shooting was done with the assistance of three other students who are still at large.”

The Police source said the suspect was traced through some death threat messages he sent to Iwatt, who allegedly refused to clear the student’s backlog of carryovers to enable him proceed for the national youth service.

“When he was arrested, he denied knowledge of the shooting, but when he was confronted with the evidences, including the text messages, he confessed that he was the culprit along with three others.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said investigation was still ongoing.
He said, “The principal suspect has been arrested, but investigation is still ongoing,”
