A final year student in the Department
of Microbiology, University of Calabar, has been arrested in connection
with the death of a lecturer in the department, Dr. Godwin Iwatt, who
was shot on May 6.
Iwatt, who was the examination officer in the department, later died on May 15.
PUNCH Metro gathered on
Wednesday that the Cross River State Police Command arrested a final
year student, whose name was withheld, in the Calabar South area.
A policeman in the unit, who pleaded
anonymity, said, “The killer has been arrested. He said the shooting was
done with the assistance of three other students who are still at
large.”
The Police source said the suspect was
traced through some death threat messages he sent to Iwatt, who
allegedly refused to clear the student’s backlog of carryovers to enable
him proceed for the national youth service.
“When he was arrested, he denied
knowledge of the shooting, but when he was confronted with the
evidences, including the text messages, he confessed that he was the
culprit along with three others.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said investigation was still ongoing.
He said, “The principal suspect has been arrested, but investigation is still ongoing,”
