Explosion rocks Ile-Ife

Ile-Ife in Osun State was in the early hours of yesterday thrown into confusion following an explosion that rocked the city.It was reliably gathered that two explosive devices reportedly planted in two strategic locations at Agbedegbede area of the town exploded at 5.30 a.m., leaving residents of the area in shock and apprehension.

Although no life was lost in the explosion, it was gathered that property worth millions of naira were destroyed.


The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu, according to sources, had visited the scene of the bomb blast.

It was learnt that the residents of the area woke up in the early hours of the day to witness the sad incident.

A reliable source hinted that the explosive devices could have been planted at night by some disgruntled elements.

The bomb was said to have affected a house in the area, damaging the roof of the building. It was also learnt that explosive devices were detected by the anti-bomb unit of the state Police Command, as members of the unit combed the area.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Maishanu, who confirmed the incident in a telephone chat with Daily Sun said “the explosion was a minor one and not a major explosion.”

He said the state police command would reinforce security in all parts of the state, urging residents to continue with their activities peacefully.

Meanwhile, Osun State Government has condemned the explosion that rocked Ile-Ife, describing it as unfortunate.

The state commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Sunday Akere, urged the people of the state to remain calm, saying the government would not allow any threat to the peace of the state.
