UNIZIK arrests 167 for impersonation

Authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka said a total of 167 persons were arrested for impersonation during the 2015 Post UTME of the institution.

The University Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu who disclosed this in a press statement issued yesterday noted that due to stringent processes deployed by the University, many fraudulent candidates did not turn up for the screening to avoid being detected.

He said the university’s newly acquired Biometric Data Capturing Machines were fully deployed where candidates’ finger prints were matched with what they already have on the data base while there was also physical verification of claimed documents presented by the candidates.

The statement noted that the figures released did not include affiliated institutions such as Federal College of Education Technical Umunze, Enugu State College of Education Technical, Auchi Polytechnic, and Pope John Paul II Major Seminary Okpuno since a date has not been fixed for their screening.

According to the statement, candidates’ results will be uploaded to the university portal while checking of result is free. Ojukwu also noted that the University refrained from sending candidate’s result to their phones when it discovered that some candidates used cyber cafe phone numbers which can easily be manipulated.

He said that based on investigations, some parents encourage their wards to cheat in examinations as some of the impersonators caught revealed that some parents paid for the service.

“We deplore the desperation of these parents. These parents are the ones criticising the university because they are afraid their nefarious activities will be detected. This is wrong and bad example that will lead to nowhere.”
