Oliseh bows to pressure, invites Iheanacho
Super Eagles manager, Sunday Oliseh finally bowed to pressure of good reason to call up Manchester City energetic striker Kelechi Iheanacho to the senior team for the match against Swaziland.
The former Golden Eaglets striker had on Wednesday night showed class and composure in his club’s 5-1 rout of Crystal Palace in a League Cup game at the Etihad Stadium.
He scored once and provided two assists as the Citizens closed out a comprehensive win that saw them book a date with Hull
City at home, in the next round (quarterfinals).
Iheanacho, was initially left out of the squad of 23 players that was released by Coach Sunday Oliseh through the Nigeria Football
Federation but late Thursday, the federation announced that an invitation had been extended to the former junior international.
“Coach Sunday Oliseh
invites Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho,” the NFF announced. Iheanacho was first called up to the Super Eagles by Keshi before the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but the player opted out in order to join up with English
side, Manchester City at the time.
The Nigerian forward has made seven appearances for Manchester City this season and has scored twice and returned with
two assists.
His invitation is seen as a welcome development as former national team coach Christian Chukwu says the
player deserves his call-up.
Also on the list is Major League Soccer striker Obafemi Martins who has been recalled to the squad.
He joins Chelsea’s defensive midfielder John Mikel Obi, Carl Ikeme amongst others. The first leg of the World Cup neliminator will be played on November 13 in Lobambo.
