We’ve taken over Boko Haram base, says military

Troops have cleared and taken over Balmo Forest in a military operation that lasted throughout the weekend, the Defence Headquarters has said.

Prior to the operation, Balmo Forest, which stretches from Bauchi through Jigawa states with links to the fringes of the Sambisa Forest, was used by terrorists as bases and hideouts for launching attacks.

A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, in Abuja on Monday, said terrorists and armed gangs operating in the forests were completely rooted out while some were captured during the operation.Continue...

Police arrest Ekiti APC leader, others for robbery

The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, Adeniji-Adele Street, Lagos, on Monday paraded a chief of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, Itunnu Odeyemi, and eight others, saying they were notorious for snatching exotic cars in the country.

The police said Odeyemi was also an APC Local Government Area executive in Efon-Alaaye, Ekiti State.

Other members of the nine-man gang are Omoniyi Ajewole, Oluseye Jacob, Oluwadamiliare Rasaki, Ajisafe Olawale, Ogunniyi Sunday, Tolani Babatunde, Abubakar Umar, and Ayodeji Olumudi.

We’re moving closer to finding Chibok girls, says FG

The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, has said that the Federal Government is closer to finding the abducted Chibok girls.

He stated that security forces were working on leads that would soon result in the rescue of the schoolgirls from Boko Haram captivity.

Omeri, who said this at his regular news briefing in Abuja on Monday, explained that the arrest of the chief intelligence operative officer of the Boko Haram by troops had assisted the security forces to get closer to finding the girls.

Two Imams and five other members of the Muslim community in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, were in the wee hours of yesterday, arrested by soldiers over alleged suspected bombs.

Nigerian army says it has killed 53 Boko Haram fighters

Nigeria's military said on Saturday that it had killed 53 fighters from the Islamist Boko Haram group when it repelled an attack on a military base in the northeast Nigerian town of Damboa.

A statement from defence spokesman Major-General Chris Olukolade added that five soldiers and a senior military officer had also been killed in an exchange of fire on Friday night. Officials say 63 girls and women abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria 2 weeks ago have escaped

Sources in northern Nigeria say more than 60 women and girls kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram two weeks ago have escaped.

A vigilante fighting Boko Haram, Abbas Gava, says the captives fled Friday after militants left their camp to attack a military barracks and police station in the town of Damboa.

A high-level security source in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, confirmed the escape and said about half the women have returned to their homes, while the others were in the custody of soldiers in the town of Gulak.Continue...

Bombs found in Abia, military cordons off area

Residents of Ohafia in Abia State were jolted yesterday by reported discovery of bombs in the community.
This was coming barely three weeks after Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) were discovered at the headquarters of the Living Faith Church (a.k.a Winners Chapel) in Owerri, Imo State and the arrest of 486 Boko Haram suspects at Aro Ngwa Junction and Imo Gate, near Aba.
But when contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Abia State Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, denied the discovery of any bomb in the area, saying what happened was just a bomb scare.Continue...

Nigerian fans in fake dollar pains

The last has defi­nitely not been heard of the Ni­geria, Argentina group F clash last week in Porto Alegre. Nigeria lost the match by a slim 3-2 margin with many writhing in the pains of the defeat. Some analysts believed the Eagles did enough to deserve a draw.

Fresh revelations showed that while Messi and his team mates were busy beat­ing Eagles on the field of play, Argentine fans were equally inflicting more pains on unsuspecting Nige­rian fans.

It would be noted that tickets for the match was a hot cake. Thousands of Ar­gentine fans had no ticket and were desperate to see the game and they were ready to buy match tickets at whatever cost. Some Ni­gerian fans who had tickets in a bid to make some quick cash decided to sell theirs and watch from the big screens outside the arena. Unknown to them, what the Argentine fans used to buy the tickets were fake dollar notes. A Nigerian fan who pleaded anonimi­ty disclosed yesterday that he went to change the dol­lar he made from his ticket to Brazil’s local currency , Reas, only to discover that what he was having was fake currency.

“My brother, the bureau de change people almost arrested me o,” were his words. “Those Argentines are bastards,” he added.

NFF: Keshi can go

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will not stop Coach Stephen Keshi from vacating his post as Super Eagles coach, after the ‘Big Boss’, as Keshi is fondly called expressed his desire to step down following Nigeria’s ouster from the World Cup.

Vice president of the NFF, Mike Umeh spoke about Keshi’s impending departure and confirmed that they will not be standing in Keshi’s way as he has decided to quit.

“We cannot stop Keshi from moving if he wants to. He is a grown man and knows what is good for him. If he so desires a greener pasture, then we can’t stop him, it’s up to him to decide,” Umeh said.

Explosion rocks Ile-Ife

Ile-Ife in Osun State was in the early hours of yesterday thrown into confusion following an explosion that rocked the city.It was reliably gathered that two explosive devices reportedly planted in two strategic locations at Agbedegbede area of the town exploded at 5.30 a.m., leaving residents of the area in shock and apprehension.

Although no life was lost in the explosion, it was gathered that property worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Terrorists kill 21 in Bauchi, Borno attacks

Maiduguri, Borno State capital was shut down yesterday when Boko Haram insurgents bombed a popular market, killing 20 people, 69 other residents were injured. There were conflicting figures of dead victims.This is even as gunmen returned to Bauchi yesterday, killing a resident and torching 50 houses.

Also, last night, the fragile peace of Kaduna was shattered, with an explosion in the city. In the blast, many people were feared dead while a handful of others were injured.
Sources revealed that in the Kaduna blast, which occurred around the Asikolaye/Bakin Ruwa area, on the Kaduna Western by-pass, buildings were destroyed.

Bomb hits Nigeria market, girls' abduction suspect held

(Reuters) - A bomb blast hit a busy market in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday, killing at least eight people, and troops announced the arrest of a businessman suspected of helping Islamist militants to carry out attacks including the kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls.

Witnesses said the explosion of a suspected vehicle bomb on a road adjoining the market in the Borno state capital of Maiduguri wrecked cars and taxis which were unloading passengers and wares. They said a suicide bomber carried out the attack.

Flood wreaks havoc in Nnewi

Residents of Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi community in Nnewi, Anambra State, have cried for help, following a flood disaster that hit the community at the weekend, destroying buildings, household property  and killing domestic animals.

Checks by Daily Sun revealed that worst hit, were residents of St. Thomas Church axis and Igwe Orizu Junction-Egbu Umuenem Otolo Nnewi-Awka Etiti Road. They blamed the persistent flood after each downpour on poorly constructed drainage system in the area.

The disaster also caused gridlock that lasted for hours. President General of Egbu community, Mr Anosike Hugo, lamented the massive destruction caused by the flood and appealed to Anambra State Government to come to the rescue of the community.

Also, a youth leader in the area, Mr. Kenechukwu Okeke, urged government to come to the rescue of the flood victims and find a lasting solution to the problem.
The contractor handling the road project in the affected area was quoted as saying the construction was based on specified standard.

Key actor in Chibok abduction arrested –DHQ

 The military has recorded a breakthrough in the investigation relating to the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls, with the arrest of a businessman believed to have participated in the operation.In a press statement yesterday, Director, Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade said the suspect, Babuji Ya’ari, headed an intelligence cell of Boko Haram and actively participated in the abduction of the Chibok students, whose whereabouts are still unknown.He stated that the suspect camouflaged as a member of the Civilian JTF in Borno State and also participated in the murder of Emir of Gwoza.Continue...
